The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) is the second film in The Hobbit trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson and based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel. The film continues the journey of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), and a group of dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), as they attempt to reclaim the lost Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.
Following the events of the first film, An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo and the company continue their dangerous trek across Middle-earth.
Along the way, they encounter giant spiders in the Mirkwood Forest, face hostile elves led by Thranduil (Lee Pace), and receive aid from the elf warrior Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and his companion Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly).
They eventually reach the Lonely Mountain, where Bilbo must confront Smaug, the dragon who hoards Erebor’s treasure and holds the key to the dwarves’ homeland.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is known for its thrilling action sequences, stunning visual effects, and the iconic portrayal of Smaug, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.

The film explores themes of courage, greed, and the corrupting power of wealth while expanding on Tolkien’s rich lore and world-building. It leads directly into the final installment, The Battle of the Five Armies, as the quest to reclaim Erebor reaches its climax.
