The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)
The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) is an action-thriller film directed by Renny Harlin, starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie follows the story of Samantha Caine (played by Geena Davis), a suburban schoolteacher with amnesia who begins to uncover startling secrets about her past.
At the start of the film, Samantha seems like a typical, kind-hearted woman living in a small town with her daughter. However, after a violent car accident, she begins to experience strange memories and abilities that suggest her past is far from ordinary. With the help of a private investigator named Mitch Henessey (Samuel L. Jackson), Samantha starts to piece together the fragments of her life and uncovers that she was once a highly skilled and ruthless government assassin known as Charly Baltimore.
As she recalls her former life, Samantha/Charly is forced to confront the people and dangers that are now hunting her, including a sinister conspiracy involving her past assignment.
As the story unfolds, Charly and Mitch are thrust into a series of action-packed confrontations, battling mercenaries, government agents, and criminals in order to survive. The film combines intense action sequences, espionage, and elements of mystery and suspense, with moments of humor, particularly in the banter between Charly and Mitch.
The film explores themes of identity, memory, and the duality of human nature, as Charly struggles to reconcile her loving, protective mother persona with her cold, calculating assassin past. In the end, Samantha/Charly must come to terms with her violent history and decide how far she’s willing to go to protect those she loves while facing the consequences of her former life.
The Long Kiss Goodnight is known for its sharp action scenes, witty dialogue, and strong performances by Davis and Jackson. Although it didn’t initially perform as well at the box office, it has since developed a cult following for its strong female lead, intense action, and unique blend of thriller and dark humor.
