Baahubali: The Beginning (2015)
Baahubali: The Beginning is the first part of an epic two-part Indian historical fantasy film that immerses the audience in the ancient kingdom of Mahishmati. The film tells the story of Shivudu (Prabhas), a young man who embarks on an adventurous journey to discover his roots, only to uncover his royal lineage and a complex family saga entwined with betrayal, power, and vengeance.
Shivudu, raised by a tribal family, grows up in the tranquil hills, unaware of his true identity. His curiosity and a yearning for a bigger life lead him to the mighty kingdom of Mahishmati. There, he meets Avanthika (Tamannah Bhatia), a warrior rebel who seeks to rescue the imprisoned queen Devasena (Anushka Shetty) from the clutches of the tyrant king Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati), the ruthless ruler of the kingdom. Through this encounter, Shivudu learns that he is the son of Baahubali (also played by Prabhas), a revered warrior and king who once ruled Mahishmati, and that his destiny is tied to avenging his father’s tragic death.
The narrative is structured as a flashback, where Kattappa (Sathyaraj), a loyal warrior of the kingdom, recounts the story of Baahubali’s rise to power, his kingdom’s glory, and his eventual betrayal at the hands of his own brother, Bhallaladeva. The past is revealed as a tale of honor, sibling rivalry, and a deadly thirst for power, where Baahubali’s strength and wisdom ultimately made him the beloved king of Mahishmati, much to the jealousy of Bhallaladeva. The story also delves into the intrigue of royal politics, deception, and the brutal fight for the throne, culminating in Baahubali’s shocking death.
As Shivudu learns the truth about his legacy, he sets out on a mission to reclaim the throne and bring justice to his family. The film features jaw-dropping action sequences, including battles on a grand scale, featuring elephants, armies, and intense hand-to-hand combat. It also explores the themes of honor, loyalty, and the struggle between good and evil, with larger-than-life characters and visual spectacles that captivate the audience.
Directed by S.S. Rajamouli, Baahubali: The Beginning blends epic storytelling with breathtaking visual effects, creating a world of grandeur and mythology that resonates with audiences worldwide. The film is marked by its impressive set designs, sweeping landscapes, and emotional depth, building up to an epic cliffhanger that sets the stage for its sequel, Baahubali: The Conclusion.
With its memorable characters, stunning visuals, and gripping narrative, Baahubali: The Beginning set a new benchmark for Indian cinema, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in the country and captivating a global audience.
