I Am Legend (2007)
“I Am Legend” (2007) is a post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Francis Lawrence, based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. The film stars Will Smith in the lead role.
The story is set in a near-future world where a man-made virus, originally created to cure cancer, has devastated humanity. The virus has turned most of the population into hostile, zombie-like creatures known as Darkseekers. Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a lone survivor living in New York City, which has become deserted and overrun by the infected.
As a scientist and the apparent last uninfected human, Neville is determined to find a cure for the virus. He spends his days scavenging for supplies, conducting experiments, and trying to stay safe from the Darkseekers, who are highly aggressive and sensitive to sunlight. His only companions are his loyal German Shepherd, Sam, and his recordings, which he uses to document his progress and maintain his sanity.
The film explores themes of isolation, survival, and the search for hope in a seemingly hopeless situation. It combines intense action sequences with emotional depth, focusing on Neville’s struggle to maintain his humanity and his belief that he is not truly alone.
“I Am Legend” is known for its striking visual effects, especially the depiction of a deserted New York City, and Will Smith’s compelling performance. The film received mixed to positive reviews, with praise for its suspenseful atmosphere and Smith’s portrayal, though some criticism was directed at the film’s third act and its divergence from the novel’s ending.
