Double Team (1997)

“Double Team” (1997) is an action film directed by Tsui Hark and stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dennis Rodman, and Mickey Rourke.
The film follows Jack Quinn (Jean-Claude Van Damme), a top counter-terrorist operative who is pulled out of retirement for one last mission to capture the notorious terrorist Stavros (Mickey Rourke). However, the mission goes wrong, and Stavros escapes while Quinn is presumed dead and sent to a high-tech penal colony called “The Colony,” designed for operatives who have become liabilities.
Desperate to reunite with his wife and unborn child, Quinn escapes from The Colony with the help of an eccentric arms dealer named Yaz (Dennis Rodman). Together, they must track down Stavros, who has kidnapped Quinn’s wife and is plotting a catastrophic act of terrorism. The film features high-octane action sequences, intense hand-to-hand combat, and a mix of Van Damme’s martial arts skills and Rodman’s unconventional style.
“Double Team” is characterized by its over-the-top action scenes, including a climactic showdown in the Colosseum in Rome, complete with tigers and explosions. The film combines elements of espionage, action, and buddy-cop dynamics, with Rodman providing comic relief to balance Van Damme’s stoic performance.
Despite its mixed critical reception, “Double Team” has gained a cult following for its energetic action sequences, the unique pairing of Van Damme and Rodman, and its outlandish yet entertaining plot.
